Anne vdB: Brought to Rome by Augustus in 10 BC together with the Flaminio, it was erected as the gnomon of the Solarium Augusti in Campus Martius. Pius VI Braschi put in on piazza Montecitorio in 1792.

Anne vdB: In 1586 Sixtus V Peretti had Fontana move the monolith to the front of the basilica. He used the foundations of the ancient Circus of Gaius, thus almost, but not entirely, aligning it with St Peter's.

Jennifer Marchetti: 27 ancient Egyptian obelisks are known, 13 of which are located in Italy. The Lateran obelisk, with its 32m (45m with stand), is the world's tallest monolithic obelisk as well as the oldest in Rome.
Anne vdB: The obelisk, called Agonale after the stadion, is a Roman copy commissioned by Domitian, moved by Maxentius to his Circus. Erected on top of the Fontana dei 4 Fiumi by Bernini in 1651 for Innocent X.
