Class info: this delightful class is designed for children 6 months through 18 months of age and does require parental participation. The class is set up with a 10:1 student teacher ratio. Parents will work one on one with their child throughout the entire lesson. This 30 minute class promotes a healthy and positive activity time for you and your child. Considerations: children between 6 months and 18 months of age span tremendous ranges of ability. Baby stars is broken up into those who are not yet walking and those who are. Expectations of each age vary. Each should be verbally praised for any degree of participation in the activity. Shyness and timidity are lessened with familiarity and routine. This applies to participation, as well as the child’s trust in the instructor and cooperation with parent and classmates. We are particularly sensitive at working at your child’s individual pace and comfort level.

Discovery Classes for Children 18 Months Through 3 Years of Age
Class info: this delightful class is designed for children 18 months through 3 years of age and does require parental participation. The class is set up with a 10:1 student teacher ratio. Parents will work one on one with their child throughout the entire lesson. This 45 minute class promotes a healthy and positive activity time for you and your child. The class format: the class begins with a group warm-up activity to catch the children’s attention, such as parachute games, singing and clapping, and stretching. After the warm-up the class will move on to various stations at each apparatus (Bars, Beam, Floor, Vault and Trampoline) . Several stations will be set up at each apparatus to keep activity going (no long lines which tend to bore the child) . The instructor will briefly demonstrate each station so each parent may work with their child individually. The instructor will circulate to the stations to assist the parent with these activities. Instructors will position themselves at stations requiring more complex spotting techniques. Each student will have a turn to perform the spotted skill and parents will be instructed on the spotting technique and safety considerations. "Free play" is encouraged throughout the class, as this program is "child directed". We want the children to attempt new skills at their own pace and never feel forced to do something that scares them. We have found that little by little, every child eventually participates fully. Each child may decide which activity in the gym is of most interest to her/himself. The class is concluded with a brief group activity. Considerations: children between 18 months and 3 years of age span tremendous ranges of ability. Expectations of an 18 month old child and a 3 year old are very different. Each should be verbally praised for any degree of participation in the activity. Shyness and timidity are lessened with familiarity. This applies to participation, as well as the child’s trust in the instructor and cooperation with classmates. We are particularly sensitive at working at your child’s individual pace and comfort level.

Preschool 4 and 5 Yrs.
Class info: rising stars is the most advanced group of our Tots Program. We continue to include 4 and 5 year olds in the Tots age span because most children at that age have not yet made the major shift in cognition (their ability to reason) that has been found to most often occur around age 6 or 7. Before this "shift" occurs, children are developmentally more like preschoolers than like school age children. Class structure, therefore, is similar to the other tots classes, only the pace is more intense and skills are more difficult and complex. Target student teacher ratios are 6:1 and class duration is 50 minutes. The class format: rising stars combines elements of both younger Tots classes and the older "Class Program". We are aiming at continuity in teaching practices to ease the transition for these 5 year olds into the Class Program. The class begins to resemble those of the older age group "Class Program". Rotations to each event now include a "viewing station" for the student to observe the activity of the child just ahead of him/her. Many children are "visual learners" and at age 5, observing an activity allows the child to make plans before taking action and their activities become more goal-directed in character. Gymnastics skills are much more complex/advanced than in the younger Tots classes and more time is spent with each skill. Rotations of 3 events per class, alternating weekly (i.e. Weeks 1&3 are Floor, Beam, and Vault; Weeks 2&4 are Bars, Vault, Tramp, and Floor) remain the same as in other Tots classes. Basically Rising Stars combines elements of both younger Tots classes and the older class programs. Considerations: 1.Although progress in gross-motor development is most rapid at this age, the nervous system remains immature creating a slower reaction time that that of a 6 or 7 year old. We're careful not to push the child ahead of schedule by our expectations. 2. Because of rapid growth, your 5 year olds center of gravity id now lower, and a child's image of their body often lags behind their increasing size. It is our goal to help them adjust to these physical changes through participation in gymnastics.
Preschool 3 Yrs.
Class info: The gym toddlers class is designed for children 3-4 years of age. This class does require the child to participate without the assistance of a parent. Target student teacher rations are 6:1. In the Gym Toddlers classes we often employ the help of an "assistant coach" to work alongside the instructor. This young person circulates the class and helps prevent "escapes" to other parts of the gym that have caught the child's attention. This is a fast-paced class in which we change activities particularly every ten seconds. We focus on extending that 10 second attention span, typical of this age, at every opportunity. This 50 minute class encourages instructor-guided direction, taking turns, sharing, and fosters the independent potential of each child. The class format: The class begins with a group warm-up activity, then quickly move on to the events (Bars, Beam, Floor, Vault, and Trampoline.) Six activity stations are set up at each event. Each activity is designed for the child to encounter challenges they can meet. One station is reserved for one on one attention from the coach, at which a particular gymnastics skills is introduced or perfected. Five other stations provide independent activity that offers experienced that support initiative, creativity, autonomy, development of cooperation and facilitate a strong sense of self (i.e. "let me do it myself".) This environment also provides an opportunity for your child to learn to be safe. We also provide each student with opportunities to "take responsibility" for others in the group that allow the student to demonstrate her/his competence. Typically there is time to work at three events per class. Events alternate weekly (i.e. Weeks 1&3 are floor, beam and vault; Weeks 2 &4 are bars, tramp, and floor.) Considerations: 1. Most 3 years olds have limited attention spans and are egocentric. They begin asserting their autonomy but still require constant supervision. 2. Generally, at age 3, a child is somewhat prepared to venture on his/her own. However, should the child be reluctant to enter the gym area without a parent, we recommend that you and your child participate in the Discovery class for 1 month to help dissipate any inhibitions or fears.

Gymnastics enhances strength, flexibility, and endurance (the elements of physical fitness).

Gymnastics develops a strong sense of self-esteem, self-respect, courage, expressiveness, and self-confidence.
Gymnastics is a “non-elimination” activity. Everyone participates. Everyone succeeds.
Boys small in stature are particularly adept at gymnastics. This is great for their self-esteem when their classmates are exceeding them in height.

Private Lessons
Many of our coaches offer private lessons to our students. We recommend that private lessons be used as a supplement to participation in our regular classes. Our classes are highly productive, and students should be learning the bulk of their gymnastics and tumbling during classes. Private lessons are a great service if the student is struggling with a particular skill, or needs a little extra fine tuning. Like anything else (piano, math, or other sports), the more you practice the quicker you learn. So, sign up for a few classes each week and supplement those with a few private lessons. You'll acquire the skills you are working on very quickly.
Students must pay a registration fee or be members of Discover Gymnastics in order to take private lessons.
Students must sign in at the front desk and pay the gym fee prior to EACH private lesson.
Coach's fees for private lessons are negotiated and paid directly to the coach.
We offer private and semi-private (2 students) lessons. For lessons of three or more, ask about our specialty classes.
Private lessons cannot be taught during peak hours, as the coaches are needed to coach classes at those times.
For more information, or to set up a private lesson, please call 713-680-0045
Private Groups
Discover Gymnastics offers special class scheduling to private groups who have 3 or more students wanting a similar class. Perfect for daycares, preschool groups, home-schoolers and play groups. Special classes are formed based on need, available coaches and available gym space. They can occur once a semester up to an entire year on a regular schedule.

Discover Stars Recreational Team
Not ready to compete?
Still want to be recognized for your skills and ability?
Our discover stars program is the choice for you!
General information
We are proud to introduce a new era in recreational gymnastics. In many other sports the athlete practices during the week and have the opportunity to show friends and family their accomplishments during a game on the weekend. We feel it is important for our gymnasts to have that same sense of accomplishment. Skills meets introduce our recreational gymnasts to competitive gymnastics. At these meets, each gymnast will perform a short routine of three skills on each of the four Olympic events. They will be judged on their individual performances. We feel it is important for every gymnast to leave the meet knowing they are winners. With this non-competitive format, participants will receive a ribbon for each event based on their ability to complete each skill. Athletes will not be placed against each other. Individual trophies will be awarded at the final meet of the season.
What are the benefits?
Skills meets provide a setting where each gymnast is recognized and rewarded for their individual performance of the required skills. These skill meets provide an arena to show what they are working on in their class, as well as showcase their progress throughout the season. Skills meets will help your child develop a sense of self-confidence and teamwork in a fun and safe environment.
Who can be a discover star?
Requirements
A minimum of 3 away meets, plus our mini-Olympics recital are required for a total of 4 meets. Registration is paid when signing up for Discover Stars. It includes the Team uniform (Leotard for girls and Compression shirt and shorts for boys), entrance fees for 3 meets and mini-O. Gymnasts may attend additional meets for an additional fee. Discover Stars fees are non-refundable. Transfers between meets are not allowed.
Practice days
We will be holding extra practices on Fridays before skills meets. We will also have a few extra practices in case you want the practice. These are always optional (not required) but we highly encourage each participant to attend. We will focus these practices on skills meet routines, meet etiquette - such as marching in, saluting the judges and how the event will run in general. This will make your child more comfortable and confident at the actual meet. If you sign up, pay and attend the practice your child can stay and participate in Parents Night Out for free!
All boys and girls ages 4-14 enrolled in our recreational gymnastics programs. This includes Advanced 5's, recreational levels 1-4, Twisters, D-Boyz, Pre-Team Boys and HOPE Team (Highly Recommended). Skills needed for the skills meets will be taught in class. There are no additional classes needed.

Discover Fitness Foundation
The Discover Fitness Foundation exists to serve a great need for fitness in our children today. Childhood obesity is at an all-time high, and quality programs are hard to find and sometimes impossible for familes to afford. We strive to provide a strong fitness program for those who need it most. We offer scholarships for those students so that they can get the quality fitness programming that they need.
