Opened in 1881, the museum facade uses terracotta tiles which were resistant to the soot of Victorian London. The largest of the famous dinosaur skeletons in the central hall is a diplodocus.
One of the gallery’s most famous pictures is the Chandos portrait, which is said to be of William Shakespeare by his friend Richard Burbage. But some dispute its provenance.
Our favourite bit: Room 5 - Sargent and Lawrence. Remarkable portraits from the early 20th Century. Then move into neighbouring Room 4 for Hogarth and London pictures.
Look out for the mosaic floors in the main entrance and stairwell. Fascinating. Work by the same artist can be seen at Tate Britain.
Small museum with interesting exhibits and fantastic shop. Definitely worth the entrance fee.

30 September: Founded in 1901, to bring art to East London, the Gallery was designed by architect Charles Harrison Townsend and, despite its expansion in recent years, remains in its original home.
28 September: See London's Roman Amphitheatre. Deep beneath the Gallery is a series of walls which marks the remains of London's Roman Amphitheatre. Entrance is included with a ticket to the Gallery.
12 September: Established in 1984, Cafe Gallery Projects is a small art gallery made up of three interlinked white rooms, with a beautiful attached patio garden.
5 September: The centrepiece of the Old Royal Naval College was planned as a dining hall by Wren in 1698 & decorated by Sir James Thornhill with the theme of triumph of Peace and Liberty over Tyranny.
4 August: Every year since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery has built a temporary pavilion between July and October as a showcase for modern architecture and design.
