Nice science museum for kids with a good planetarium show. Perfect activity on a rainy day on the big island.
Nice Japanese garden overlooking the bay. Worth a stop but don’t leave things visible in your car.
Beautiful location and view over the bay. Great for lunch. Sushi rolls are decent and worth trying some odd ones like pork and fiddle head ferns. Good cocktails as well.
Surprisingly good water slides including one in the dark - lots of fun. Stupid that the bars don’t open until afternoon.
One of the best restaurants on the island. The local pork is incredible as is the ahi. This place is the real deal and should be on everyone’s lists.
Beautiful black sand beach but surf can be rough and the tourist even rougher. So many turtles, look for their butts in the waves and their faces beneath the surface.
Awesome out and back trail with lots of recent history and a surprising view at the end.
Worth the drive even in the rain, you will hit better weather by the coast and there is so much to see.

Scenic lookout now at the end of the road. You can sometimes see Nene‘s in the parking lot.
Probably one offstage best overall views of the caldera. Expansive and super cool even if it’s just steam coming out.
Worth hiking out to the boardwalk. Fascinating history and carvings even when it’s really hot.
Spectacular park regardless of if the lava is flowing or not. Such diversity in terrain and activities. Be sure to spend more than a day.

Beautiful grounds with some interesting buildings. Good group of volunteers, lots of buildings moved from Pasadena.
Great addition to the food scene. The smoked fish rillettes, gnocchi and crab pasta special are standouts. Will be back for sure. Nice outdoor area.
Cool hike thru a rain forest and then across a frozen lava lake. So worth doing and pretty easy, good for kids but bring snacks.
