Follow the signs to Mile Rock beach. When you've almost reached bottom of stairs (~200 steps!), veer to the right up a hill to a plateau with mini-labyrinth, incredible view of the Golden Gate.

The Palace of Fine Arts is a neo-classical "ruin" originally constructed for the 1915 World's Fair and is the only structure from the historic event that is still situated on its original site.
This is actually War Memorial Court and is home to samples of ground from the major WWI battlefields. It is also quite beautiful and well cared for.
Most of the eateries here close at 7pm, so plan ahead if you want to see the lights after 7 and want to eat.
Fort Point was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1853 and 1861 to prevent entrance of a hostile fleet into San Francisco Bay and was occupied in WWII in order to protect the Bay.

Walk past the abandoned gun batteries dating back to the Spanish-American War to reach the best view of Golden Gate Bridge. Bring your hoodie or fleece though, as the wind gets chilly!
